The Natural History Museum of Los Angeles County was the first museum in L.A. to open its doors 109 years ago and is poised for an exciting new era as it plans for the future. Having recently completed a new strategic framework, the Natural History Museums of Los Angeles County—including NHMLA at Exposition Park, La Brea Tar Pits and museum in mid-Wilshire, and the William S. Hart Museum in Newhall—is looking forward to new building projects and campaigns, exhibitions, community outreach, and innovative audience engagement.

The Natural History Museum of Los Angeles County is seeking a Content Developer for our Exhibitions department. The Content Developer works closely with the Exhibition Developer along with a few stakeholders within the Exhibitions, Research & Collections, Interpretation, Digital Strategies, and Advancement departments at the Natural History Museum to develop intro panels and new diorama labels (using an existing template) for NHM's 73 existing habitat groups. The candidate will research, source materials, write, work proofread, and manage the production of ~80 new bilingual labels for NHM's three open diorama halls. Each label has about 700 English works and 12 images. This position is funded by a Pacific Standard Time (PST) grant from the Getty Foundation and has a maximum of 400 hours. It is an exciting time as we embark on new journeys of becoming a museum of, for, and with L.A.

Responsibilities for this position include, but are not limited to:

  • Research the ecology of the North American and African species featured in the halls.
  • Consult with Taxidermist and content experts to build an accurate species list for each diorama.
  • Source and manage rights for images of each species in each diorama.
  • Source and manage rights for range maps of each focal species.
  • Work with internal teams to produce graphic maps.
  • Ensure accuracy of maps with content experts.
  • Source, edit, and manage rights for “first-hand experience” stories and images for select dioramas


This position has the following requirements:

  • Bachelor's degree in history, natural sciences or a related field preferred but not required.

  • Knowledge of natural history, especially mammals and birds, is highly desirable.

  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.

  • Ability to operate a computer and manage digital assets using various Google applications

  • Ability to work offsite, independently as well as collaboratively with a team, and to manage time efficiently.

  • Commitment of maximum 400 work hours, schedule to be determined in collaboration with the selected candidate.

The Natural History Museum of Los Angeles County is seeking applicants who have demonstrated experience and commitment working with a diverse community. Hourly range for this position is $23.00 based on experience plus excellent benefits. This is a Part-time, temporary, non-exempt position. This is a 24-week position and must start no later than September 18, 2023.
