Objective: The position of Staff Accountant is a technical (professional) position, which functions to perform a variety of basic accounting tasks in Tax. The Staff Accountant acquires a good working knowledge of fundamental tax procedures, their applications and the proper understanding and application of working paper organization and documentation. Initially, s/he is given less complex tax assignments. As s/he gains experience, s/he is given more difficult assignments and greater responsibility to work autonomously. Staff accountants' functions are designed to meet the strategic and operational objectives of the firm at the basic tactical level. Responsible for: Under the direct supervision of a partner, manager or supervisor as assigned, the Staff Accountant applies accounting principles to analyze financial information and prepare accurate workpapers for tax engagements. S/he is responsible for knowing and achieving the Firm's expectations for work quality and professional development, and for learning and upholding the Firm's cultural and core values. S/he follows the progress of engagements and helps to identify and research tax issues as assigned. S/he is also accountable for expressing interest in, and gaining approval to focus on areas of interest for possible future specialization. S/he is inquisitive and proactive in learning about how the Firm develops prospective clients and in seeking leadership development opportunities within the firm. To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily.
Core Skills/Competencies:
Required Skills, Knowledge and Abilities (with or without accommodations): A bachelor's degree with no less than a 3.0 GPA. Master's in Taxation or a Master's with a concentration in tax. 150 hours required by the Virginia Board of Accountancy to acquire a CPA license. Working knowledge of professional standards and regulations. Displays the ability to make sound decisions under pressure. Effectively presents information and responds to questions from groups of managers, clients, customers, and the general public. Ability to solve practical problems and deal with a variety of concrete variables in situations where only limited standardization exists. Ability to interpret a variety of instructions furnished in written, oral, diagram, or schedule form. Fluent in speaking, reading and writing the English language. Preferred Qualifications: CPA Previous Tax Accounting Experience
