The Roanoke Times is seeking a Web Developer II to join our newsroom staff and help us produce compelling journalism and further expand our newly designed website, roanoke.com, as w! ell as other digital channels.
We’re looking for candidates who enjoy a creative, fast-paced environment where their ideas can be put into action quickly. A journalism background is not required, but applicants should value the newsroom mission of serving our community and telling its stories.
Essential duties and responsibilities:
Collaborate with newsroom editors in developing digital storytelling tools that draw on a variety of formats (text, video, data, animation)
Maintain existing news content management systems and applications, and ensure the highest functionality and optimal UX/UI
Troubleshoot cross-platform/ -device and â€"browser compatibility issues
Help conceptualize and produce digital presentations â€" desktop and mobile â€" of in-depth newsroom projects
Remain current with existing and emerging technology, and contribute innovative ideas and concepts for site and product improvement
! Regularly participate in cross-functional projects and sub-tea! ms as needed
Minimum skills and qualifications:
- Demonstrated understanding of creating an appealing and efficient user experience in a dynamic web publishing environment
- Minimum one year hands-on web development experience in a professional environment
- Strong understanding of object-oriented programming
- Demonstrated expertise working with a structured programming language (JavaScript, jQuery, PHP)
- Experience building websites using (X)HTML and CSS
- Familiarity with blogging tools such as WordPress and the ability to design, construct and deploy blogs
- Familiarity with social network integration to websites and apps
- Experience building and designing widgets or mobile apps across platforms /SDK is preferred
- Willingness to explore and learn emerging technologies (ex. HTML5 and CSS3)
- Excellent collaboration and communication skills
- Able to manage multiple project! s and meet tight deadlines
- Degree in computer science or related field, and/or equivalent work experience
