The Virginia Department of Transportation (VDOT) is responsible for building, maintaining a! nd operating the state's road, bridges, tunnels and ferries. Through the Commonwealth Transportation Board, it also provides funding for airports, rail, and public transportation. Virginia has the third largest state-maintained highway system in the country covering 58,321 miles of interstate, primary, secondary and frontage roads. VDOT has about 7,500 employees making it one of the largest state agencies in Virginia.

VDOT is seeking an individual to manage the Salem District's Enhancement, Revenue Sharing and Locally Administered Programs with local governments. This position will manage, design and coordinate transportation projects from the project inception phase through construction in an accurate, responsive, cost effective and precise manner. Serves as responsible charge engineer in review of designs prepared both in-house and by consultants. Responsible for preparing quantities and estimates, developing schedules, monitoring project activities, and reportin! g project status. Prepares and presents engineering data. Prov! ides technical guidance on transportation design issues (including roadway, trail, sidewalk, and ADA issues) from the preliminary engineering process through construction.

Minimum Requirements: Considerable knowledge of roadway, trail, and sidewalk design criteria, construction methods, standards, specifications and materials. Considerable knowledge of civil engineering principles as they relate to geometric roadway design. Ability to perform detailed engineering calculations. Ability to communicate effectively both orally and in writing. Ability to estimate quantities and cost of materials/equipment/labor. Experience in report writing, evaluation, research and ! training. Ability to positively represent the agency to internal and ex! ternal individuals and groups. Skill in the use of design and analysis software and drawing tools to develop simple and complex roadway designs. Experience managing and scheduling a wide range of projects of varying complexity. PE License is required.

Preferred Qualifications: BS in civil engineering or related field or education/training/experience that demonstrates the ability to perform the job. Certification or work toward certification as a Project Management Professional (PMP). Experience using project management and estimating software. Experience with Microstation, and MS Office products.

Special Requirements: This position is designated as essential and as such, all duties associated with this position are required during emergency situations, which may include, but are not limited to inclement weather, disaster response, and emergency operations. VDOT will determine when essential positions are required.
