Description: Washington Gas is at present looking to employ Communications Architect right now, this vacancy will be placed in Virginia. Washington Gas is seeking a Communications Architect to manage the Microwave (MW), Land Mobile Radio (LMR), Supervisory Control and Data Acquisition (SCADA) data radio and other wireless communica! tion networks utilizing various network management system (NMS) platforms. Responsible for all MW, LMR and SCADA radio systems implementation and upgrades. Will be on call 24 hours a day, 7 days a week in case of emergencies. Additional responsibilities include, but are not limited to:

  • Architects, plans, and leads implementation of all communication networks, hardware and systems software upgrades/installations.
  • Uses the network management system to analyze the microwave system and determine corrective action.
  • Creates maintenance practices and procedures for proactive maintenance of all wireless equipment.
  • Performs troubleshooting and configuration on SCADA network devices (switches, routers, and radios).
  • Maintains systems reliability and performance in conjunction with (Radio Frequency) RF Communications staff.
  • Leads system alignments, configuration, upgrades, performance monitoring, system disaster recovery, s! ecurity and usage reporting to include trending and growth est! imates.
  • Interacts with internal and external customers to define their needs and provide service up to level 2 of the open systems interconnection (OSI) model
  • Ensures system is configured to support continued business improvement and changing business needs.
  • Ensures WGL's licenses are current and operating frequencies are compliant with FCC rules and regulations regarding licensed and unlicensed RF bands.
  • Plans for future growth and capacity in order to meet business requirements.
  • Ensures mission critical communications are available 24 hours a day, 7 days a week for company's normal and emergency operations and are promptly restored in case of outage.
  • Assists the Supervisor of RF Communications with staffing, training, work scheduling and fills in for Supervisor as necessary.
  • Bachelor's degree in a technical discipline and at least 3 years of experience in radio frequency (RF) communications and network protoco! ls at layer 2 of the OSI model. Or, a minimum of 7 years of experience in RF communications and network protocols, radio systems and wireless networks.
  • Experience with RF communications and one or more of the following: MS Windows NT/Server 2008/XP/Vista/7, routers, switches, TCP/IP and SNMP.
  • Advanced Network Certification preferred.
  • Net+ certification preferred.
  • Proven ability to use computer software and applications, including Microsoft Office, to share, retrieve, research and present business information.
  • Proven ability to troubleshoot software/hardware in a complex technical environment under extreme pressure.
  • Proven expertise with a variety of system performance and monitoring tools, including CAD, digital microwave, and LMR conventional and trunking systems.
  • Demonstrated working knowledge of the required engineering for communication sites, RF propagation requirements and frequency allocations to include ! calculation of system reliability preferred.
  • Demonstrated abil! ity to establish rapport and effective working relationships with business partners.
