Job Description:
Science Systems and Applications, Inc., (SSAI) located in Hampton, VA seeks a motivated Operations and Test Engineer to provide support to the Air Traffic Operations Lab (ATOL). This position is in support of the Langley Information Technolg! y Enhanced Services (LITES) contract and is located onsite at NASA Langley Research Center. Under the LITES contract staff are responsible for the development and maintenance of the NASA Langley Research Centerâs Airspace and Traffic Operations Simulation (ATOS) research system, one of the largest airspace distributed simulation systems in the world. The ATOS system consists of multiple computer workstation-based aircraft simulators networked together that are able to perform joint simulations with other NASA research centers, the FAA, and MITRE. Under the auspices of the Joint Planning Development Office (JPDO) Next Generation Air Transportation System (NextGen) initiative, NASA uses ATOS to conduct research into the feasibility of advanced Air Traffic Management (ATM) concepts in an effort to solve real world problems.
The responsibilities include; the daily operations in the customerâs Air Traffic Operations Lab (ATOL) onsite at NASA Langley Research Center,! the execution of simulation software, collection and processi! ng of research data, computer systems hardware and software troubleshooting and repair, and the demonstration of complex simulation scenarios to internal and external customers. Responsibilities also include interaction in a professional environment with experiment participants from the aviation industry as Subject Matter Experts. Other duties will include the creation and maintenance of operations procedures, configuration management of lab hardware and software, assistance in writing test plans, and reporting and tracking of system problems. The candidate will join a lean Agile process, fast paced research environment and will work with NASA and Contractor Subject Matter Experts in support of one of the worldâs most unique facilities for Modeling & Simulation, Aircraft Aerodynamics Modeling, and Air Traffic Management research.
Required Qualifications:
- Must have a BS Degree in Computer Science, Engineering or a related field(or equivalent ex! perience) and at least 4 years of experience to include an understanding or desire to learn software systems integration, verification and validation testing.
- Ability to work within a mixed team of simulation operators,system administrators, developers and researchers and coordinate the prioritization of daily activities.
- Ability to work directly with the onsite management on a daily basis and to interact with stakeholders, internal users, customers, and partners to fulfill research software requirements and to effectively communicate testing status.
- Ability to analyze and trend simulation data; to prepare and distribute test summary reports.
- Conduct experiments directing subjects verbally and through written messages while maintaining experiment log entries.
- Submit technical maintenance requests, procurement requests and experiment checklist procedures.
- Must have additional experience in one or more of the following tec! hnical areas:
- Computer lab operations involving the creation, ! distribution, and archiving of large (Terabytes) of research data.
- System integration, test generation, validation and verification.
- Ability to write clear and concise operations procedures.
- Ability to execute system test procedures and perform simulation demonstrations.
- Software development in scripting languages.
- Strong communications and customer presentation skills.
- Ability to work in a fast paced and dynamic research environment.
- Troubleshoot software and hardware anomalies then provide symptomatic reports.
- Data Warehousing and/or Data Mining
Must have additional experience in one or more of the following domains:
- Distributed modeling & simulation computing systems
- Software Development Life Cycle process
- Windows 7/XP and/or Linux Operating Systems
- Knowledge of Air Traffic Management operations, technologies and sy! stems.
- Aviation Weather products
- Aircraft Aerodynamics, 6 Degrees-Of-Freedom Modeling
- Trajectory Prediction, Flight Management Systems
- Aerospace Engineering
- JPDO NextGen ConOps and Architecture
- Understanding of or working experience in the NASA environment.
- Pilot and/or Air Traffic Controller experience
