Description

The Manager, Responsible Mining & Energy (RM&E) is situated within CI’s Center for Environmental Leadership in Business (CELB), providing scientific and related project management expertise for RM&E projects and primarily supporting major corporate relationships for the program. Capacity is needed to innovate, demonstrate and share responsible business practices within the extractives industry, in particular including leading practice in environmental and social impact assessment, planning, and monitoring, and application of the environmental mitigation hierarchy; performance standards and safeguards and biodiversity offsets design and implementation; green infrastructure, particularly for responsible water management; biodiversity assessm! ent; landscape values assessments and conservation planning; e! cosystem services valuation; and / or GIS / spatial mapping. Core responsibilities of the Manager, RM&E include:

Technical innovation and advising: support advising of internal and external stakeholders, and technical writing on leading industry biodiversity and ecosystem services practices, bringing key CI science and innovations to bear in major RM&E corporate relationships.

Project management: under supervisor’s direction, manage projects in support of major RM&E corporate relationships.

Communications & capacity building : with supervisorial support, represent and promote the RM&E program and CI to key internal and external audiences on mining & energy-related issues (e.g. conferences, industry associations, multi-stakeholder platforms, and publications), in order to support growth of technical capacity for responsible mining & energy practices.

RESPONSIBILITIES

Technical innovation and advising
Advise internal and external stakeholders on leading industry biodiversity and ecosystem services practices, bringing key CI science and innovations to bear in major RM&E corporate relationships through strong collaboration with CI’s Science, Field Programs, and Ecosystem Finance Divisions.

Support RM&E account leads responsible for major corporate relationships through provision of subject-matter expertise on issues, including leading practice in environmental and social impact assessment, planning, and monitoring, and application of the mitigation hierarchy; performance standards and safeguards and biodiversity offsets design and implementation; green infrastructure, particularly for responsible water management; biodiversity assessment; landscape values assessments and conservation planning; ecosystem services valuation; and / or GIS / spatial mapping.

Regularly provide written technical analysis and input into key RM&E corporate partnerships aimed ! at demonstrating improved environmental management through the design a! nd implementation of responsible mining & energy practices.

Contribute technical content to major RM&E corporate partnerships & other funding concepts, proposals, and donor reports in collaboration with corporate account leads.

Project management

Manage and collaborate with CELB & cross-institutional teams to ensure timely delivery of high quality, technically-focused project outputs in support of key RM&E corporate partnerships.

Develop project work plans and track progress to ensure timely production of key technical deliverables.

Manage and monitor project budgets, in coordination with CELB Finance & Operations team, and make adjustments as needed to keep to budget allocations.

Write donor reports as needed for projects under direct management.

Develop, in coordination with CELB Finance & Operations teams, budgets for concepts and proposals.

Communications & capacity building

Deliver present! ations and write articles and social media content for publication intended to share CI experiences and expertise with key audiences, including at internal CI and corporate partner meetings, as well as external conferences and events.

Support CI’s Global Extractive Sector network objectives to promote opportunities for capacity building and information sharing between national programs on technical issues related to engaging the mining, oil and gas sector, focused on leveraging and building capacity within HQ and Field Programs.

Working Conditions

Position is based in the CI-Arlington, VA HQ Office.

Requires domestic and international travel up to 35% of the time.

QUALIFICATIONS

Required

Four-year college Bachelors degree, preferably in in conservation biology, natural resource management, environmental management, or similar.

At least 5-7 years of experience relevant to environmental conservation and! responsible development practices.

Demonstrated applied exper! ience in deploying technical knowledge to complex projects.

Strong problem solving and output-focused analytical skills.

Superior project management capabilities.

Experience with proposal and budget development.

Excellent written and verbal communication skills in English.

Preferred

Masters in conservation biology, natural resource management, environmental management, or similar

Experience-based technical knowledge of business practices relevant to responsible mining, oil & gas development e.g. environmental and social impact assessment, planning, and monitoring, and application of the mitigation hierarchy; performance standards and safeguards and biodiversity offsets design and implementation; green infrastructure, particularly for responsible water management; biodiversity assessment; landscape values assessments and conservation planning; ecosystem services valuation; and / or GIS / spatial mapping.

! Experience working directly with international partners from diverse cultures and backgrounds.

Non-profit experience.

Demonstrated passion for international conservation and development.

Foreign language proficiency e.g. Portuguese, Spanish, French, Mandarin, or Bahasa.
